Community Church of Gonzales

Community Church of Gonzales — dedicated in 1884 as a Baptist Church, it represents classic Gothic Revival features … pointed windows, steeply pitched roofs and ornamental details. It is typical of the religious architecture of small towns of late 19th century California. As one of the County’s oldest functioning churches, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Greenfield

Greenfield Cultural Arts Center

Established as an inclusive arts center for participation in the visual and performing arts, classes and workshops include drawing, painting, art camps, art exhibitions, dance and drumming classes, plus sewing projects that support the performance activities.

 

Yanks Air Museum

Highway 101 at Thorne Road interchange, Greenfield, CA

An extension of the main facility in Chino, CA, this museum also features a selection of restored aircraft, but additionally has space for an educational program with classrooms and a state-of-the-art theater. (Under construction)

 

Greenfield Community Science Workshop

45 El Camino Real, Greenfield, CA

An after-school program, opened Tuesday through Saturday established to inspire kids and communities about the wonders of nature and the physical world. This free public space is full of tools, materials and fascinating exhibits that include a fog tornado, wind tube and vacuum chamber. Animal friends on-site consist of thousands of worms for composting, plus an intriguing selection of reptiles.

Salinas Valley Fair

This annual Spring event highlights, throughout the course of four days, entertainment, interactive educational activities, agriculture competition, cultural events, food and drink and one of the largest Junior Livestock Auctions in four counties. It’s a family-friendly environment with a little bit of fun for all ages.

 

Robert Stanton Auditorium

720. Broadway, King City, CA

Built in 1939 and named for the architect who designed it, the building is a spectacular example of Art Moderne style. California artist Jo Mora created the bas-relief triptych above the front doors, as well as other artistic embellishments. Also known as the King City High School Auditorium, it’s used regularly by the school and local community groups.

 

L.A. Hearne Company

Family-owned and operated for more than 80 years, this traditional feed and farm supply store is a fun side trip off Highway 101.Wander through the aisles for an education on chicken raising, horse grooming, animal feed and supplements, pet supplies, outdoor products, as well as a beautiful assortment of men’s and women’s ranch style apparel, hats and accessories. Eight generations later, the Hearne’s know a lot about ranch life.

 

Monterey County Agricultural and Rural Life Museum

1160 Broadway Street, King City, CA – San Lorenzo Park

Located within San Lorenzo County Park, collections here are predominately agricultural related implements, house museum furnishings, historical objects specific to the last quarter of the 19th century. Buildings on-site include the Exhibit Barn, Olson Blacksmith Shop, Tractor and Harvester Shed, the History of Irrigation Museum, the Spreckels House, La Gloria Schoolhouse and the King City Train Depot. Open Tuesday through Sunday.

 

History of Irrigation Museum

1160 Broadway Street, King City, CA – San Lorenzo Park

Exhibits trace the history of irrigation from the Mission Era to the today and focus on the impact of agriculture in the Salinas Valley and water management. Hands-on displays for both children and adults.
Don’t miss the topographical map of the entire Salinas River drainage, or the short film, narrated by local farmers and historians, that discusses water usage in the Salinas Valley.

Soledad

Soledad Historical Society

137 Soledad Street

Located in a historic International Harvester building, this small but compact museum’s mission is to to preserve and share the history and heritage of Soledad with future generations. Support comes from members and volunteers. It’s open on Thursday from 4 to 7:30pm from April through October, or by appointment. Call 831-678-3504.

 

Los Coches Adobe

Highway 101 near Soledad, CA

This family home was built more than 175 years ago on Rancho Los Coches, land granted to by the Mexican government to the local Soberanes family. Throughout its storied history it’s been a Wells Fargo Station agent office, post office, stage coach stop and inn, but today it is protected historical monument. As a reminder of the Spanish influence throughout California, it is worth a visit.
